Derren's Career

November 20th-21st 2010

SHOWicon.jpg

Derren was a guest during both days of the Memorabilia film show at the NEC in Birmingham.

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the great man himself and have the chance to ask all those questions you've been meaning to ask, about his many roles, during his long and varied career.

Along with a souvenir photo, you could have come away with that treasured piece of memorabilia signed by him.

Doctor Who and Prisoner fans were treated too, as Mark Eden who played Marco Polo in the 'lost' William Hartnell adventure alongside Derren, also appeared.

As Number One Hundred, he was also his Prisoner co-star in the episode 'It's Your Funeral'

Let's hope Derren will make further personal appearances again soon.

Good News! - Derren recovered from illness and appeared at the 15th Bradford International Film Festival in 2009, preceding a screening of 'Where Eagles Dare', to reminisce with BIFF Artistic Director Tony Earnshaw.

Unfortunately Derren withdrew from the Agatha Christie Company production of 'And Then There Were None' due to illness.

Luckily he made a swift recovery and returned to the stage, making some personal appearances at various film events along the way, as you will see from above.

Finished touring in P.G Wodehouse's 'Come On, Jeeves'.

TEN TIMES TABLE

Touring in Alan Ayckbourn's 'Ten Times Table'

Windsor's special repertory company brought their calamitous comedy play to the The Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne.  It was worth checking out soley for Derren's hilarious role as the bonkers Tim, who goes berserk at the pageant, celebrating the re-enactment of the mythical event called 'The Massacre of the Pendon Twelve'.  A clash of classes, cultures and personalities result in rows, riots, tears and loud bangs!

MEETING OUR HERO

Derren Makes an Appearance at Autographica 2006

We finally get to meet our hero after only fleeting glimpses, following his recent stage performances and I can report that he is a genuinely nice guy.

In fact he made such a great impression on me, this is what inspired me to create this fansite.

Derren appeared over the two days with his wife Miranda, appreciating the fans that arrived and signing pictures of himself as Major von Hapen.
He proved to be a great raconteur regaling his visitors with entertaining behind-the-scenes movie & showbiz stories.

I cannot think of a more deserving biography waiting to be written. It would feature on any top ten list of eagerly awaited life stories. Just consider some of the big names he's worked with, not to mention his own ups and downs!

If he does not write it himself, then I will consider doing an unauthorised one instead!

Derren only proved and reminded people how sorely missed he has been from our screens.  Especially as he has only recently returned from Australia after ten years away, though as you can see the comeback trail has just started and is gaining momentum.

So watch this space and I hope Derren finds time to squeeze in a couple more appearances sometime in the future. (I believe he his taking a well earned rest first!)

Let's hope that SKY Movies repeat their showing of the excellent 'The Naked Runner'. Though not the best print in the world (a very bad pan-and-scan job), it is however the only way to see the movie, as it's still not available on DVD and was discontinued on Warner Bros video years ago.

Plus: Doctor Who fans can catch up with Derren forty years after his last connection with the series, with these two audio stories.

He last appeared during William Hartnell's stint as the Doctor, in the story 'Marco Polo' (below).
